We’ve all heard stories about a driver who gets stranded in the desert and a week goes by before he’s found, right? And maybe you share the same thoughts I used to have. Not a problem. I don’t drive through the middle of nowhere.
But you don’t have to travel through remote areas to get stuck in a car emergency. Case in point, look at all the people who spent the night on an Atlanta interstate during a freak January snowstorm in 2014. And more recently…all the cars caught in the flood surge on Interstate 45 in Houston.
With all the time we spend driving, it’s only wise to have a car emergency kit in your vehicle. So, grab a rubbermaid container or a duffle bag and let’s get busy making your kit.
Here are the essential items to include in your car emergency kit:
- Jumper cables
- Spare fuses
- Foam tire sealant (aka Fix a Flat)
- Jack
- Spare tire
- Tire chains
- Tow strap
- Cat litter (for traction in case you get stuck)
- Collapsible shovel
- Flares
- Hazard Triangles
- Ice scraper
- Battery powered cell phone charger with spare batteries
- Flashlight
- Duct tape
- Paper towels
- Toilet paper
- Water
- Non perishable food (think: protein bars!)
- Lighters
- Blanket
- Tools
- First aid kit
- AAA card
- Maps
- Rain poncho
- Book or playing cards
- Your Get Home Bag (Download a Get Home Bag Checklist.)
This list is meant to outfit your car with the basic emergency supplies. Obviously, if you have special needs, you should plan for them and make sure to stock the necessary supplies. For example, if you have little ones, don’t forget to include plenty of diapers and one or two toys!
Now, I’d love to hear from you!
Is there something in your car emergency kit you think should be added to this list?
